Tips to get your company name approved
Make it unique
Use a coined or brand word that no one else uses, for example "Zentrix" or "Nuvora", instead of only common words like "Global" or "India".
Show your business
Add a word for your activity, such as Software, Foods, Exports or Infra. MCA checks that the name matches the main object of the company.
Avoid restricted words
Bank, Insurance, Mutual Fund, Nidhi, Board, National, Government and similar words need special approval or are not allowed.
Small changes do not count
Changing spelling, adding "The" or "New", using plural or changing Pvt Ltd to LLP does not make a name different from an existing one.
Check trademarks too
A name can be rejected, or you can face a legal claim later, if it matches a registered trademark. Search the trademark register before you apply.
Keep two options ready
In the RUN form you can give up to two names, and in SPICe+ one name at a time. Keep a backup name in case the first one is rejected.
Name looks good? TaxBucket can reserve it and complete your Private Limited Company registration, LLP registration or OPC registration, and protect your brand with trademark registration. Already running a company? We take care of ROC annual compliance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a company name is available in India?
Type your proposed name in the "Check Name Availability" tab. We check it against MCA naming rules and search the registered company and LLP names for an identical or similar match. The final approval is given by MCA when you apply through the RUN or SPICe+ form.
Does an "available" result mean MCA will approve my name?
No. It means no identical name was found and no naming rule problem was spotted. MCA can still reject a name that is too similar to an existing company, LLP or trademark, or that does not match the business activity.
How can I check if a company is registered in India?
Use the "Search Company / CIN" tab and type the company name or CIN. If it is registered with MCA, you will see its CIN, status, date of incorporation, ROC, capital and registered office.
What is a CIN?
The Corporate Identification Number (CIN) is a 21-character number given by MCA to every company. An LLP gets an LLPIN instead, like AAB-1234.
Which words cannot be used in a company name?
Words like Bank, Insurance, Stock Exchange, Mutual Fund and Nidhi need regulator approval. Words suggesting a government link, such as National, Board, Commission, Union or Government, need Central Government approval. Names protected under the Emblems and Names Act cannot be used.
How long is a reserved company name valid?
A name approved through the RUN form is reserved for 20 days for a new company. For an LLP, a name reserved through RUN-LLP is generally valid for 3 months. Check the current period on the MCA portal when you apply.
What does "Active" or "Strike Off" status mean?
Active means the company is registered and in existence. Strike Off means the company name has been removed from the register, usually for not filing returns or on its own request.
